Avoid the "Playground Bark".

We spent quite a while looking online for a play bark to go under our son's new play fort a few months ago and thought we'd found a good product on Woodland's website.

They had two products listed. "Play Bark" which shows a picture of wood chippings when you view the listing on their website and "Playground Bark" which showed a picture of bark nuggets. We chose the Playground Bark as the chippings picture shown for Play Bark looked unsuitable.

When I laid the product it was in the middle of winter and the bark was wet and so reasonable soft, though I was surprised by the number of sharp sticks and wood in the mix, as I'd expected a carefully screened bark only product to make a soft play surface.

The real problem became apparant when the weather improved and the bark dried out. Immediatly our son started getting splinters and cuts from really very light contact with it, not even a fall, just touching the bark was enough to result in tears and tweezers pulling the fine sharp splinters out. Not what you'd expect from a play surface.

We contacted Woodland to say we didnt' think the product was suitable and express concern that the bag they'd delivered it in said it was a product for landscaping mulch, no mention of "play bark" anywhere.

After much to-and-fro with the supplier and manufacture it transpires what Woodland sell as "Playground Bark" is in fact a premium landscaping mulch not recommended by the manufacturer for use as a play bark, though Woodland themselves have put the product through impact testing to certify it as suitable for use as a loose impact absorbant surface.

While I accept this may be the letter of the BS standard for certifying a impact absorbant surface for use in a playground it doesn't take much thought to also believe that the mix of product provided shouldn't cause cuts and splinters on contact.

Woodland eventually offered about a 10% discount on the real "Play Bark" single type wood bark nuggets manufactured for the purpose to top up the product they'd supplied but we felt we'd rather take our business elsewhere.
