I attended this school back in 1995 when I was 13 years old. It was cool but I was going through some things in those ages. Long story short,,I got kicked out an sent down to the wilderness program. "Chief Danny" just took over as head counselor. I had the time of my LIFE there! We canoed the Okefenokee swamp. Hiked the Chattanooga ridge and lived in structures by the river where we hunted arrow heads. I haven't heard from any of the people from there in 30 years but I can remember it like it was yesterday. We did the "ropes course" and ate our meals in a great hall. I graduated and now have a wife and 4 kids that I sometimes tell stories to about those times in my life. That program REALLY gave me a different outlook on life and helped me be the man I am today. So if you're going through things in life to where you don't see a future,,think again because I'm living PROOF that ANYONE can change their ways and REALLY make a difference. Have faith in yourself because I HAVE FAITH IN YOU💪💯💞

I was admitted or rather maybe, permitted, to attend in the semester of '99-'00, and if i try, could remember the entire experience in vivid detail. I was told that, other than one student (in the late 80's, early 90's), an "8 year old black student" if I'm not mistaken although the factual circumstances of that student remain unknown to me, who had been an exception in being admitted, i was the youngest student otherwise to ever attend John De La Howe at 11 years old..
My first day/night there was an illumination, and I'll never forget after saying to the room that i in fact, "was sorry", they all in unison replied, "we know you are, now apologize."...
this may seem offensive and, possibly abusive to an eleven year old boy right in the thick of separation and every other anxiety you might could possibly imagine, but, i would attest that from then and as time went on, a bond, even familial ties that sadly have not since been reaffirmed, were formed... not unlike the bond you might form with those you serve in the military alongside.
i don't doubt, unfortunately, that mistakes were made, and i wonder if there were others who may have had a bad experience and how so, and why.. but from my own personal experience, Mr. Moore, Ms. Wells.. wherever you are, and the few who still live that may remember mentoring me..
Thank you.
i hope someday to possibly see you again. Anthony, i hope you got away from whatever made you wanna get away..
Brandon, I'll never forget you flipping out until you had 7,500 paragraphs to write, or that i had to sit and watch as i wrote my own 2,500 paragraphs 👀.. i hope you've harnessed that rage since.. and you're a legend for busting the wilderness coach with the director lady you sly devil you 😂
and Frankie, sorry about them fruit loops in your eyes that morning, but you had it coming..
Aim lower when you attain full mount, you maybe wont hit so much kitchen tile,
mr moore was a premier ref, so,
you missed me.
again, i was eleven.
yall were like 14. 😂
i wish i still knew how to do that step dance turn around routine, i try from time to time, but just can't get it..
All of you, Columbia Cottage '99,
Hope you're all well.

17 years later and I still remember this place. I was 14 years old....Not gonna get into my past but you WILL find structure and discipline in this place. I've
had good memories here, and some bad but it helped nonetheless. I am now 33 and still utilizing some of the life skills taught.

Was there for my senior year of high school (McCormick HS 1961). Parents had recently divorced, mother clinically depressed, angry father. Dr. Gettys worked with family court without my knowledge to place me at de la Howe. Certainly saved my sanity, my high school career and possibly , my life. IAM SO GRATEFUL.
