A BIG ISLAND MUST DO!!

During our week on the Big Island, the tour of Hawaii Forest Farm was definitely at the top of our list. Jordan did a great job of showing us the mamaki tea farm but also how they are working to honor the native Hawaiian landscape.

What impressed me about the tour is the detail of how Hawaiian native plants are at risk due to invasive species as well as what their farm is aiming to do in the face of it all. We also got to see regenerative farming practices that work with other plants in the landscape such as bananas, taro, and more. This tour was amazing because it taught about the real Hawaii, and it added a layer of depth and meaning that just wasn’t present at other tours.

At the end, you get free samples of mamaki tea, and it was delicious! We sat, drank tea, and chat. It was a really nice time. You also get a hefty sample to take home with you!

If you are on Big Island and around the Volcanoes NP area, I cannot emphasize enough how much you need to book a tour for Hawaii Forest Farm!!!

If you are visiting Volcanoes National Park, definitely make time to visit this mamaki farm! The farm is lush and beautiful and the tea is refreshing. Take the tour with Jordan to learn all about the farm and the forest!

This was such a fascinating, off the beaten path experience. I learned so much about forest farming, mamaki, and the farm's ongoing efforts to restore the forest to its native state. Jordan, the manager at the farm, gives the tours and was so kind and accommodating. His background is in outdoor education, so he cares deeply about sharing and making sure you walk away having learned something important. The tea tasting at the end was delightful - you can try the 5 different kinds of mamaki that they grow and harvest. They are also only 10 minutes from Volcano NP. Highly recommend checking it out!
