I love the Alabama Farmers Market and shop there frequently. I was disappointed this year as pumpkins and mums were double the price of retail stores. It was so much of a cost disparity that I couldn't support them this year. I usually enjoy lower prices and higher quality - but with the way the economy is I couldn't justify buying fall decorations at double the price. It pains me to say this!!!

Each year the Alabama Farmers Market gets a little bit more sad than the year before. I have been there many times in the past (60's, 70's, 80's) and every stall was occupied. Certain times of the year it was a 24/7 event. Not anymore. Saturday at 1pm, less than half of the spaces under one shed were occupied. The produce and veg were beautiful. I went without much forethought and had no cash. I made my purchases from the retail shed. The one in front was closed. I usually buy from the second one and get specific items from the other. Be prepared to reach deep in your pocket. Prices are absolutely through the roof. Cantaloupe $8, Shelled peas, 3 servings at best $7.99. Box of average tomatoes $35-$45. Two years ago they were $15. Culls were $8-$10.
The produce was definitely better than any grocery store. The corn dripped with sweet juice.
No more solo Alabama Farmers it seems. Our economy is going to drive them all out of business and malnutrition will increase.

This was an... interesting...stop. if I lived in that area, I'd probably go to the Alabama Farmers Market pretty often, but since we were leaving the next day, there didn't seem to be much point in getting flowers or veggies

I brought a watermelon, cantaloupe and fried green tomatoes. The watermelon was so sweet. I went back and brought a 2nd one of both. The man was from Prattville, AL. I will be going back again.

This has always been a regular stop when driving through Birmingham. The last visit, however, was disappointing. Not near as many vendors and most were places that have permanent stalls there. A lot fewer of the 'buy off the truck from our farm' folks.
