Joan the owner is AMAZING! I'm a former B&B owner and have a deep respect for the hard work it takes to give every guest. We drove by this charming B&B and couldn't help but stay when we saw the place. Joan was super friendly and accommodating by accepting us without reservations. We stayed in the Cowboy room where she even put giant stuffed animals on my son's bed to greet him. We were blown away with the care and attention to detail she provided in giving a true Hawaiian aloha experience. The home is Victorian and rusticity beautiful. We slept wonderfully In an antique bed with plush linens. To top it off aside from the pastries, cereals, coffee, the butter was homemade, she served us homemade yogurt, granola! We also stock up our cooler with delicious edibles farm stand where she sells herbs and veggies from her garden as well as breads, and the most amazing bunt cakes, breads, preserves and goat cheese! I am in awe that one woman can do so much. I would say this place is perfect for people who can appreciate an authentic farm to table local experience. Skip the pricey hotels, this place is a steal! We've already referred several friends there and will be back!

I stayed here three nights and toured the Big Island from here. Overall, I found the location perfect, the rooms are decorated with various paraphernalia, mine had a horse theme. Joan (owner/operator) is a remarkable lady running a fairly complex farm full of animals (sheep, goats, horses, pigs (at times), ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys). Great breakfasts, and friendly opportunities to chat with other guests. I found my room and accomodation immaculate. If you want a sterile hotel room with limited personality in the city and don't want to chat with anybody, you might want to consider other places. Personally, I loved it!

Not exactly knowing what we could expect we booked this B&B for being our “central station” for our 2-week vacation on the Big Island. We were positively surprised!!||As we arrived we found everything as described: the friendly inn-keeper Joan welcomed us, and showed us the little working farm first. ||The Paniolo Room was very cosy with sufficient space and an own bath. Everything was clean and in good shape. we immediately felt home. The house is not new by any means, but it is clean & comfortable.||In the morning, you are welcomed by fresh coffee smell and a very good natural breakfast with fresh self-produced granola and yoghurt, fruits, freshly baked bread and self-made jam or marmalade.||We enjoyed this family breakfast atmosphere with all the other guests around the table, good talks about the former and future activities. Joan was very happy to add additional tips.||During the evenings, we enjoyed to sit in front of the chimney to read a book or to write the diary or just having a glass of wine in good company. ||The farm is located off the main road at a very quiet side street but very close to the Volcano National Park entrance. So, it is easy to visit the park at different times of the day or days so you can see the lava at day and night. Your ticket is valid for several days anyway.||There is, however, a tiny minus to report. Although Hawaii is known for its awesome climate, there are some days of the year which might not be that pleasant by temperature. Just think about having some portable heaters available to kick the chilly air in the morning.||Beside this: perfect for a short and longer stay!!!||Joan, thank you very much for helping to make this vacation unforgettable!

We spent 4 nights in the Pianola room. It’s cluttered with cowboy paraphernalia that means nothing to me. I don’t like clutter. There was really no drawer space to unpack a suitcase, so I laid things out on the desk. |We checked in at 4:30 pm and there was nobody around, even though the website and prior instructions said check in was 3:30-5 pm. The keys were in an envelope with my name on it. Inside the envelope were directions to the room. That’s it. Little notes around the place had instructions but I’d hardly call that welcoming. I had questions but when I called the Tel. Number, which is long distance for me, there was only voicemail. The room was musty and had an unpleasant smell. It also was dusty. Granted we are relatively close to an active volcano. A real person might have assured me that this was the odour of the sulphur. I found that out the next day when we hiked the Kīlauea Iki trail and there was that smell again. Breakfast the next day was stale bread and stale Easter bread, no yogurt, nor granola. The hard boiled eggs and butter are from the farm. Jam and breads also prepared by the owner. I felt that she was putting more energy into the farm than the guests who are paying good money for a lodging. The cost is not much less than nearby lodges and other B&B’s yet Joan seems to want to have self checkin and self checkout, too. I don’t think you can have it both ways. She was in the kitchen all mornings, doing her packing of preserves or whatever, but she wasn’t very communicative. Maybe she’s shy. Once we asked a tourism question, she was very helpful and even printed out information. There was rain every day, so the room is damp. There’s a dehumidifier that we didn’t realize was necessary until our 3rd day. It made a real difference. All in all, the room is OK but I wouldn’t want to return here.

There is something slightly uncomfortable when staying somewhere and your hostess gives the impression she wishes you were not. Let us say that Joan is businesslike but friendly and welcoming are not part of her vocabulary. Our room was spacious and comfortable enough, though the pervading smell of damp through the property was slightly off putting. Joan did provide a varied breakfast with some different options that we really enjoyed but there will be no need for a return visit.

We were a group of 7 who stayed 1 night. ||||Great location for exploring the volcano national park. ||||The house is a old, but that is part of its charm. ||||The rooms and beds were comfortable and clean and the included breakfast was excellent (especially the papaya). ||||Joan went out of her way to ensure we were looked after, especially at breakfast. ||||We enjoyed our stay.

We just came back spending four nights at this amazing place. This is not regular B&B, you have a whole house at your service, great breakfast, living room to use at afternoon/night with a fireplace and great selection of books, arts..||We were in Bamboo room overlloking the farm. What a treat to weak up with a rooster call and see a horse and sheep gazing. Joan is a wonderful host. We could go and see the animals, relax at the lanai at any time. My son is 20 but he enjoyed every moment going back to the stall with goats, sheep, ducklings and petting the horse. It has excellent wifi and that is really important if you travel with teens. I hope to come back again.||As for the location, this village is the closest you can have to Volcano park. It has a great restaurants, gad station, general stores and laundry service.

A unique B and B. From the clean eclectic rooms to the delicious home made yogurt. A real working farm with tons of character! Quiet and cozy. Joan was nice and genuine. We were lucky enough to be there to meet a just born baby goat! A true Hawaiian homestead experience.
