When someone tells me they're from our area, I always ask them first if they know about the Germantown Kitchen Garden or "Amanda's Place". Most do but if not I tell them it's the thing they need to do next to feel the soul of the area. The Farm is a special treat in today's modern world. She and her staff are super knowledgeable and friendly and the produce is of an amazing quality, but most of all she has purposely created a community space that feels like a throwback to the 1970s when folks loved to gather to support community projects. My wife and I have been going for years and love supporting Amanda. She's a good egg who is committed to building a community spirit around her veggies and plants and other products she sells from local makers. We always look forward to when the farm opens in the spring and love the seasonal markets sponsors where we can meet new makers and connect with friends. Even if you're not from the Mount Airy-Germantown area, going there on a Saturday is well worth the ride!

Next to my own backyard produce this is the best place for veggies. Buying and eating food grown 2 blocks away is such a gift when you live in an urban area. Hyperlocal 💖 Plus there's Germantown Espresso Bar for a weekly store bought coffee. And bread from 2 local bakeries. Plus more. I love it.

Germantown kitchen garden is a gem! Amanda cares for the land the way she cares for the community. We purchased so many native plants from her to get our unruly ugly yard to be a dreamy oasis. We couldn’t find better prices out there. Farmers market items are gorgeous and it feels good to eat local. Haven’t tried their CSA but want to one season.

An incredible, tucked-away, peaceful urban farm. Stop by on Saturday mornings during May - October for fresh produce, plus eggs, freshly baked bread, pizza dough, local honey, and more. They also have a plant nursery (for online or in-person browsing) with herb/vegetable seedlings, native plants, fruit trees/bushes, perennials, shrubs, trees, and flowers.

There's even a seating area in the back where you can get local coffee and enjoy the beautiful oasis. Such a special community place in Germantown.

When moving to Germantown, I had the good fortune to be told about Germantown Kitchen Garden and now I'm sharing here to pass on that fortune. GKG has just about something for everyone. Love to support local farming but find CSAs too unpredictable? Buy a farmstand share and pick what you want from the farmstand over the growing season. Still too much commitment? Hyperlocal produce, the most amazing mushroom selection, honey, bread and more is available at the Saturday farmstands. You may just decide that it's a perfect Saturday morning routine to head to GKG, pickup a coffee, peruse the nursery, and some of the best tomatoes in Philly (in season, of course)..,. These aren't just the best Philly-grown tomatoes but better than any other tomatoes I've purchased during tomato season. The biggest rival would be my own tomatoes- grown from GKG tomato seedlings! Whether you're a seasoned gardener, a newbie, or something in between, the nursery is worth checking out. GKG may not be as large as some other nurseries, but Amanda's selection is thoughtfully curated and top notch, inclusive of natives not easily found locally. I've even discovered natives I didn't know about that now live in my yard! The plants and bushes around GKG have a bit of a wild quality - an inspiration to allow my natives the space and time to do what they want to do & all I can say is wow. As I enter my 5th growing season at my house, I'm thrilled to see what we've been able to create for the birds, pollinators, and soil critters - in no small part due to the diverse natives we've picked up from GKG. My biggest problem now is looking out for earth worms every time I plant new - a welcome problem since it's evident that the soil is healthier than when I started (& we got a soil test early on that already rated our soil an 'A')
After the farmstand closes for the season, GKG keeps delivering to the community with a delightful winter market. I have bought a few wreaths- these are stunningly beautiful fresh wreaths that you can feel extra good about since the wreath sales support GKG in the offseason. So the next time you only find that native bush you want online, pop over to GKG.. Worst case scenario- you pick up an incredibly delicious loaf of sourdough bread and are on your way . Best case scenario- you've got a diverse set of natives (&/or non-native favorites) thriving on your property. Obviously, I love GKG, but I challenge you to check it out and try NOT to fall in love.

We wanted potted herbs to use in lieu of table numbers for our daughter's wedding at the Morris Arboretum. That meant 16 different herbs that would all look good on the same day, so we could have a thyme table, a lavender table, etc. Amanda was incredible in working with us to come up with the herbs that she knew she could have looking good and then follow through and actually grow them--for a reasonable price. The herbs anchored the natural-looking centerpieces for a very lovely and personal day. GKG place is a gem.
