This is a great place to visit over the weekend. They’ve planted many fruits, vegetables & flowers. On Saturdays, they have a farm stand so you can buy their fresh produce. Also, they have picnic tables & chairs & to sit and relax. They really take care of the farm. It’s very beautiful! They host different events & workshops too. Make sure to follow them on Instagram for updates! The staff is welcoming and friendly! I always love visiting gardens & nature spots 🙂

I had a great time at Red Hook Community Farms, they offer local tours, classes, and its an open space for the public to relax and have some fun in the sun on your Ikea run. I went to the farm last weekend to complete a Mid-scale Community Composting Tour as part of the NYC Master Composting Certification course requirement.

The tour was extremely informative, we learned about the different composting systems at the site and the history of environmental racism in Red Hook. This garden is an example of a green space where community members are taking action to address food insecurity. It’s great to see a garden in the city that actually benefits members of the local community.

I highly recommend the tour or visiting the garden if you’re interested in gardening and making more sustainable choices.

What fun it was to volunteer at the Red Hook community farm compost project! I learned a ton about compost and a generously gave me some materials to turn my home composter into a more effective composting system. We moved a pile of compost that had been sitting there for 9 months. The objective was to aerate the compost. They had all the tools, shovels, pitchforks and gloves so it was super organized. Xander the head volunteer was really knowledgeable and very encouraging. Yes, the work was hard but the camaraderie was fun. Afterwards, I bagged up some beautiful compost to take home as well as wood chips, and wood shavings to fix my own computer at home. Next time I'd like to do something less strenuous like sifting compost. Lol!

The farm here is nice every weekend BUT it takes 45 mins to jus get to the checkout line. Its RIDICULOUS. I once came earlier around 930 and some rude arabic lady send me home because she didnt want me to buy until 10am and when i came next weekend people were there before 10 happily buying. Some ladies give off those nasty vibes. Hate that i have to wait almost 25 mins to move 2 steps. ANNNOYING!!!!!

Good people, great energy. Organizers/employees here are incredibly well organized and equipped to handle groups of volunteers (they are also very fun people who are passionate about sustainability and the environment). I love that they appreciate their volunteers so much, and it really shows in the wonderful volunteers who show up regularly. Go here, meet cool people, get an awesome workout, and tan like you've never tanned before.

Volunteered with Added Value Farms (now Red Hook Farms) for almost two years, from August 2015 to May 2017. Amazing project lead by a great team providing opportunities for youth, healthy food for the community, and showcasing how renewable resources can be used in urban environments. If you’re interested in getting involved, check out the “New York Cares” website for volunteer projects at Red Hook Community Farms. I can’t recommend this project enough!

The inspiration, community building, and community service of the staff and volunteers of the RH Compost Operation and Farm are a bit beyond what words can capture. For anyone interested in grass roots initiatives that can move mountains (of hills of compost), the RH Compost Operation and Farm bare a true testament. While this is an urban sustainability project, volunteering or even visiting can be an almost meditative experience.

I am not a farm life girl at all! I seriously could care less about recycling! But after a trip to the red hook farm, I can honestly say that has changed! Im still not a farm loving kind of girl but what an impact this place has made on me! The supervisor of the farm gave a class on composting (theory and practice ) and what we can each do to create change!!!!!! There was absolutely no smell! This place was spot on clean to the T. ( FYI I’m a hard critic, impressing me takes work) AND I WAS IMPRESSED !!!!!!!!!!! What an amazing opportunity to be consumed with so much information on how to support our earth and future! Hands down a TRIP EVERY NEW YORKER needs to take!
